Mary Halvorson/Reuben Radding/Nate Wooley - Crackleknob (2006)

With the superb Dragon’s Head (Firehouse 12, 2008), Mary Halvorson proved herself to be one of the most astonishing, original and exciting guitar players of the last years. Crackleknob is the result of a collective session held a year before, although the maturity of the guitar player is already surprising.

In spite of the fact that in this CD we can as well enjoy the accurate bass of the also engineer and producer Reuben Radding (another name to be taken into account) and one of the best interventions recorded of the trumpet player Nate Wooley, Halvorson’s incredibly personal guitar seems to exert some kind of silent leadership inside this project.

Anyway, the trio works perfectly and produces an abstract and very organic music, in which is really difficult to tell the difference between the written and the improvised. Three young musicians who play in a refreshing way something that may well be really brainy. On the contrary, no way is this sound brainy, pals.
